21. Types of Physical Access Controls
Physical Access Control Mechanisms
Organizations use different physical access controls to manage and monitor entry into facilities. These controls can protect both outer boundaries and internal secure areas.
Badge Systems and Gate Entry
Access systems often use badges, turnstiles, mantraps, and controlled door locks. Authorized users are enrolled in the system, given access devices, and then verified before being allowed through doors or gates. These systems are usually logged.
Card Types
Common badge or card types include barcode, magnetic stripe, proximity, smart, and hybrid cards.
Environmental Design (CPTED)
CPTED uses workplace design to improve safety and reduce crime. It relies on layout, visibility, controlled movement, and reducing hidden spaces to discourage unauthorized activity.
Biometrics
Biometrics verify identity using unique personal characteristics. The process includes enrollment (storing biometric data) and verification (matching the user’s presented data to the stored record).
Types of Biometrics
Biometrics can be physiological (fingerprint, iris, retina, palm, or vein scans) or behavioral (voice patterns, signature dynamics, or keystroke dynamics).
Limitations of Biometrics
Biometric systems are accurate, but they can be expensive, raise privacy concerns, and create hygiene or user comfort issues.
Main Idea
Physical access control uses entry systems, environmental design, and biometrics to restrict and monitor access to secure areas.
