16. On-Premises Data Centers

Organizations can either outsource data center services or operate their own on-site data center. If they run their own, they must provide the building, infrastructure, and environmental controls needed to keep systems secure and available.
An on-premises data center includes data center rooms or wiring closets that contain network connections, provider equipment, servers, and switching components. Protecting these physical spaces is important for system security and reliability.
It also requires proper HVAC and environmental control. Servers generate significant heat, so cooling and airflow must be managed to keep equipment within safe operating limits. Environmental monitoring is also needed for issues like leaks, fumes, and HVAC failure.
Reliable power is essential. Data centers need steady electrical supply, backup batteries, and backup generators sized to support critical systems. Power failover must be tested to make sure it works.
They also need fire suppression designed for server environments. Fire detection and suppression must protect the room while minimizing damage to equipment.
